The Salmon Fly, Kelson, George M.
14 Kelson, George M. The Salmon Fly
Bovey Tracey, Devon Flyfisher's Classic Library 1995 Reproduction Full-Leather As New No Jacket Limited Edition 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
With a new Introduction by John Buckland. If there is one milestone in the whole of salmon fishing literature which no fisherman should be without, it has to be George Mortimer Kelson's The Salmon Fly: how to dress it and how to use it. Sadly, at prices from £800 ($1500) upwards, it has, until now, been a dauntingly expensive book to obtain. When Kelson distilled a lifetime of salmon fishing wisdom into this privately published work, he was bold and confident. He produced a book of 510 pages of text and 46 pages of illustrations plus 8 coloured plates showing 52 flies. This FFCL edition has an extensive Introduction by John Buckland giving an authoritative background to the angling works of G. M. Kelson. 600 pages, 8 colour plates, 74 black and white illustrations. Fully bound in leather with marbled endpapers AEG, Silk marker ribbon, in Slipcase; one of a Limited Edition of 750 copies.

A true labor of love by the First Couple of Salmon Flies, this book has absolutely breathtaking illustrations. This book features the work of some American fly tyers, some overlooked, some under appreciated, and some seen here in a new perspective. "During the last couple of decades of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, a small number of dedicated craftsmen worked to create the art of fly tying in America. Tiers such as John Harrington Keene, Mary Orvis Marbury and Herb Welch were in time joined by others, notably Carrie Frost, Theodore Gordon, Louis Rhead, Carrie Stevens, Charles DeFeo, Preston Jennings, and Ray Bergman. Regardless of their age or gender, these tiers shared characteristics that made them a new and active core at the center of the trade. In their time, they were successful far beyond normal expectations and enjoyed ever-widening reputations and influence. Unfortunately what happened next is a phenomenon that transpires all too frequently in history. Their work simply went out of fashion. There have been hundreds, even thousands, of early amateur tiers who were never acknowledged for their contributions to American fly tying. We have selected five individuals to represent those untold craftsmen who left collections of dressings that were forgotten or scattered for decades." Featuring wet flies by Ray Bergman, previously unpublished Atlantic salmon flies by Charles Defeo, salmon and steelhead flies by Preston Jennings, trout and bass flies by Mary Orvis Marbury, and Rangely flies created by Carrie Stevens. 560 pp. This 12 lb masterpiece is new, enclosed in the original clear mylar sleeve and still in the original factory sealed unopened cardboard outer shipping container.
