DIGGER: Portrait of a Bamboo Rod Maker
1 DIGGER: Portrait of a Bamboo Rod Maker
Stonykill Films 2006 0971004315 / 9780971004313 First Edition DVD As New
For over 50 years, Francis Degere has been making bamboo fly rods in his Adams, Massachusetts home. "Digger," as he is known, spends 100 hours handcrafting each split-cane rod from a single culm of bamboo. His skills and techniques are revealed as he teaches the craft to his apprenctice, Fred Moran, thus passing on the torch to the next generation. Shot in documentary style, this film is more than a document of a man and his craft, more than a how-to guide: it is a tribute to a way of life and work that is vanishing in our modern mechanized world.

10 Fitch, Fitz James Amateur Rod Making: The Writings of Judge Fitz James Fitch
Cincinatti Whitefish Press 2010 First Edition Hard Cover As New Limited Edition
152 pp. New. One of 100 copies of the limited edition. In 1882, E.C.Z. Judson--the famed angling writer known internationally as Ned Buntline--wrote to the new journal The American Angler that "the finest amateur rods...I have ever seen, are made...by Judge Fitch, a great fisherman, of Prattsvile, New York. Will he favor the readers of The Angler with a description of the make, weight, and wood used...?" With this one short paragraph, Judson set in motion events that culminated in January 1884 with the publication by Judge Fitz James Fitch of a seven part treatise on rod making for amateurs. Intended for publication in book form, despite their popularity, the articles were never collected. Now, for the first time, Fitch's entire unabridged treatise on rodmaking appears in book form, along with a collection of his other rodmaking, fishing, and miscellaneous writings. Included also is a detailed biography of Judge Fitch by Dr. Todd E.A. Larson. Learn why Judge Fitch was considered by no less of a fishing authority as A.N. Cheney to have made rods as well as Leonard and Wheeler, and read about the Victorian method of constructing rods (including split bamboo) that deeply influenced a generation of rod making fly fishermen. Limited to 100 numbered hardcovers, this is the first volume in the new "Fly Angler's Desktop Library."

16 Gooding, Russ & Flagler, Tim Finishing Bamboo Rods
Golden Witch Technologies 2003 First Edition VHS As New
Aesthetic decisions, fit, and finish define the quality of a split bamboo rod long before an angler tests its action over rising fish. An elegant rod is a harmonious composition, melding classic styling with components that hark back to the era of our forefathers: agate stripping guides, fine silk threads, cork, native wood, nickel silver, and natural oil & resin varnishes. Well finished, a bamboo rod looks good, feels good, and even smells good. Although each rodmaker will choose a different aesthetic, all rodmakers must master the details of fit and finish.
